Minotaur Beetle (Typhaeus typhoeus)
|
|
This medium sized beetle is a member of the scarab/chafer family, and like many of them it gathers dung to lay its eggs in. It can dig a burrow up to 1.5 metres deep. It is active for much of the year especially in areas with sandy soils. I found this one rolling rabbit dung to its burrow on Town Common near Bournemouth, Dorset, UK on 22/02/09. Taken with a Canon 5dMkII and 100mm macro lens.
